Numerical analysis of the radial turbine with volute casing of the automotive turbocharger
Abstract
Turbochargers are used predominantly in automotive vehicles to enhance the performance of these vehicles. Turbochargers comprises both centrifugal compressor and radial turbine. The radial turbine along with volute casing is chosen for this study to understand the flow characteristics. The radial turbine is investigated for varied operating conditions. The numerical study is carried out using ANSYS CFX. The pressure drop is influenced by both the mass flow rate and rotational speed of the turbine. The total-to-static efficiency at isentropic condition for varied operating conditions are compared and the total-to-static efficiency for case 3 is found be maximum as 62%. Hence, the case 3 operating parameters is found give the maximum total-to-static efficiency.
