Using the AFINO code to identify and catalog EMIC waves in the magnetosphere
Abstract
Waves are plentiful throughout the magnetosphere and are an important source of energy transfer and plasma heating. Reliable identification and characterisation of different types of magnetospheric waves is a challenging but important task. Here, we demonstrate the use of the AFINO analysis code to identify and catalog electromagnetic ion-cyclotron (EMIC) waves observed in Van Allen Probe data in 2013. These waves have typical frequencies in the range 0.1 - 5 Hz and are an important source of pitch angle scattering and energetic electron loss from the outer radiation belt. We present case studies of waves identified with AFINO, comparing our results with those previously reported in the literature. Finally, we demonstrate how we can use AFINO to systematically analyse Van Allen Probe data to build up a comprehensive picture of EMIC wave activity over time.
