Modeling and Analysis of Localized dB/dt Structures with the GAMERA MHD Code
Abstract
Interaction of complex geomagnetic activity with the Earth's 3D conductivity structure plays a key role in driving localized geomagnetic field variations. These localized and rapid geomagnetic fluctuations are not only a major space weather target but also a reflection of fundamental magnetospheric and ionospheric processes. In this study, we performed two high-resolution global MHD simulations using the GAMERA code to investigate the characteristics and drivers of localized dB/dt events. The results show that the coupled magnetosphere-ionosphere model set up can reproduce the localized events. In addition, we also show that the features of the localized events demonstrate similar characteristics to observed events. Lastly, we discuss possible driving mechanisms of the localized dB/dt events, as identified from the simulation results.
