Diversity equity and inclusion (DEI) challenges in the space weather industry
Abstract
The space weather industry sector has grown considerably since its inception in 2000. The first decade saw challenges in building commercial cases for providing space weather services. The second decade saw growth and maturity in the industry. Currently the industry is seeing an increase in the acceptance of diversity, equity, and inclusion. Working in an intense and competitive industry can be challenging for minorities to navigate. Minorities have to constantly code switch, face discrimination and inequality, and still produce quality work. Though the STEM industry is becoming more diverse still over 70% of the STEM workforce is white, and women only make up 27% percent of the workforce. There are ways to navigate these challenges. Our presentation will provide examples of common DEI challenges and offer personal guidance of how to navigate through the industry workforce to help other minorities find their voice in an industry that is still working towards inclusion.
