Event-based Space Weather Data from Multiple, Diverse Sources with SWx TREC's Space Weather Data Portal
Abstract
Investigating a space weather event's impacts across the heliosphere requires comparing diverse observational data products and models correlated to the time range of the event of interest. The SWx TREC Space Weather Data Portal at https://lasp.colorado.edu/space-weather-portal is designed to enable such comparisons. It organizes data held in disparate repositories by the date range of an event and then requests the selected data from the data's source, in real time, for display and downloading.
Large data repositories at NASA, NOAA, and the USGS are adept at data storage, collection, and stewardship. Of necessity, they organize their data by observatory, satellite, instrument, or model. The SWx TREC Space Weather Data Portal is a tool that leverages the work done by these repositories to make their data accessible to a wider audience. While each repository has different access patterns that span multiple scientific domains, the Space Weather Data Portal is designed to bring together space weather data from across these disciplines and organize it by date. In the Space Weather Data Portal, the user selects a date range of interest and then is able to select and compare diverse observational and model data related to that specific solar event, together, all on one screen. The Data Portal makes it easy to trace solar data for an event from the Sun to the Earth. This presentation will talk about the agile, adaptive, open-source technology underlying the Data Portal that allows diverse data to be correlated by event. It will show a method for searching for space weather data by event and demonstrate how event lists, especially definitive event lists that are formally curated and archived by the community, can be put to immediate use in space weather research. The ability to quickly correlate diverse space weather data by event is essential to advancing space weather science. This presentation will demonstrate an evolving tool for just that purpose. The Space Weather Data Portal at https://lasp.colorado.edu/space-weather-portal can easily disseminate event datasets designed to ease and accelerate space weather research.- Publication:
