Temperature-Anisotropy-driven instabilities with the AWSoM solar wind model
Abstract
We generalized the Alfvén Wave Solar atmosphere Model (AWSoM) to include the temperature-anisotropy-driven instabilities from the PLUMAGE model. The improved model now also accounts for the parallel and oblique firehose instabilities besides the Chew-Goldberger-Low Firehose, Mirror and ion cyclotron instabilities. Further generalizations include the dependence of the instabilities on the electron temperature next to the usual parallel plasma beta and temperature anisotropy. We performed AWSoM simulations with the eleventh orbit of NASA's Parker Solar Probe (PSP). The perihelion of this encounter is 13.3 Rsun reached at 2022-02-25. We compare the observed distribution in the parallel plasma beta-temperature anisotropy plane with the simulated PSP trajectory in that plane. Supported by the NSF SWQU and PREEVENTS programs.
