Numerical Investigations of ULF waves in the Magnetosphere-Ionosphere system using realistic parameters
Abstract
We undertake a study of ultra-low frequency (ULF) waves once they are excited in the outer magnetosphere. We use a non-orthogonal dipole geometry for regions beyond the ionosphere and spherical coordinates for the ionosphere inward. These grids are interpolated and cold plasma MHD equations are solved using a finite-difference time-domain method. We use empirical particle densities and magnetic field values to construct quantities like conductivities, permittivities, etc. These realistic parameters allow the inclusion of the asymmetric plasmasphere bulge, which gives richer cavity mode structures. We investigate the resonant frequencies of these cavities and also look at the behaviour of field line resonances in the magnetosphere-ionosphere system.
