Assessment of Health Vulnerability due to Urban Heat Islands effect in Major Metropolitan Cities in Nepal
Abstract
In this case study, we use satellite remote sensing thermal datasets to investigate the health vulnerability hazard to the public in Major Metropolitan cities in Nepal. Urban heat island is a known factor which can cause human health hazards. The major cities in Nepal have gone through a terraformation process in the last three decades; especially during the internal political unrest, the internal migration from villages to the cities accelerated prompting rapid urbanization. This further increased the fraction of the population vulnerable to the UHI impacts. We will present an interesting interplay of meteorological factors, land use change and heat island impact in these cities.
