Human-in-the-loop virtual space mission simulation
Abstract
As the space sector works towards establishing a human settlement on Mars, technologies are being developed for human exploration of our solar system. The ability to simulate a virtual Moon or Mars Village with a human-in-the-loop will dramatically improve the design considerations of future space missions. Virtual reality has enabled the construction of high-fidelity space environments, with the added function of physics modelling it is possible to gain further insights into what future space missions might look and feel like. Using OptiTrack,a 3D motion capture tracking system, multiple humans, spacecraft and other structures can interact in a physical workspace. The integration of this tracking information into a virtual reality environment then provides further visual aid. In this paper, we will introduce a virtual reality space systems simulation software with the interface to the OptiTrack, and demonstrate a human habitat example on Mars.
