Corrigendum to "Upper Cretaceous teleostean otoliths from the Severn Formation(Maastrichtian) of Maryland, USA, with an unusual occurrence of Siluriformes and Beryciformes and the oldest Atlantic coast Gadiformes"; Cretaceous Research, 125 (2021), 104867, pages 1-29
Abstract
Shortly after publication of our study on fossil otoliths from the Maastrichtian of the Severn Formation in Maryland, USA, it occurred to us that the therein newly established otolith-based genus Severnichthys Stringer & Schwarzhans, 2021 in fact is preoccupied by Severnichthys Storrs, 1994, an actinopterygian fossil fish genus from the Rhaetian, Triassic, of Great Britain based on teeth. In a recent paper by Diependaal & Reumer (2021) it was proposed to suppress the genus Severnichthys, which they considered as nomen dubium. Nevertheless, and in order to avoid confusion, we hereby emend the newly introduced genus name Severnichthys as an otolith-based genus from the Maastrichtian to the Latinized form Severnichthus.
