A first member of bamboo-feeding lineage plant bug (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae: Mecistoscelini) in mid-Cretaceous Burmese amber
Abstract
The first fossil species of bamboo-feeding plant bug lineage, Mecistoscelini is presented with description of a new taxon, Cretamystilus herczeki gen. et sp. nov. based on a specimen in mid-Cretaceous amber probably from the Hukawng Valley, Kachin State in northern Myanmar. Morphological characters of this fossil specimen and similarity to the extant genus Mystilus Distant are presented. The importance of pronotum and femoral structures is presented for character evolution in Mecistoscelini, and host association with the bamboo plants is hypothesized.
