The IODP IMPACT workshop series: envisioning the future for communicating scientific ocean drilling
Abstract
During summer 2021, the U.S. Science Support Program (USSSP) for the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) ran a series of three workshops in partnership with the Science Education Resource Center (SERC) in envisioning ways to broaden the impact of scientific ocean drilling (SciOD) in the coming decades. These IMPACT workshops provide a foundation for which to chart the future course of science communication and outreach for SciOD. The series explored STEM education and science communication, engaging workshop participants as collaborators, while paying special attention to issues related to diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. This overall effort is aimed at developing a robust U.S. SciOD broader impact strategic plan in support of the 2050 Framework for Scientific Ocean Drilling (https://iodp.org/2050-science-framework) and its call to "communicate far-reaching scientific ocean drilling knowledge to the broader community." The three workshops in the series Engaging the Public, Informing Policymakers, and Preparing the Next Generation used a variety of synchronous online techniques, including panel presentations, on-line brainstorming with Google Jamboards, and live illustration, together with asynchronous discussion boards for beginning and continuing the conversations and gathering information and ideas. Participation by a wide swatch of individuals, including NASA personnel, Congressional staffers, education and communication experts, and those both near and far to current IODP science and education efforts, contributed to the gathering of many new insights. IMPACT's goal is to build relationships and collect information from an array of different voices, including those who have been historically marginalized in STEM. The ultimate goal of IMPACT is to build upon previous strengths and successes of the SciOD outreach and education programs and expand into new and creative areas to increase reach and audiences. The information gathered in these workshops will inform the design of a larger in-person workshop in early 2022. In this presentation, a summary of findings, ideas and insights will be presented, including how those findings will inform the in-person workshop scheduled for early 2022 and the work beyond.
