A New Way to Include Inertia in the Rice Convection Model
Abstract
In order to self-consistently incorporate the effects of inertia in the RCM and replace and the previous assumption that plasma density and pressure were localized in the equatorial plane with the more realistic assumption that the density and pressure are constant along field lines, we have reformulated the RCM equations. This is most easily modeled with a field-aligned grid (Euler potentials) using the formalism of Riemannian geometry. The main result is the substantially modified conductivity equation, which takes into account the inertial effects on the time-evolution of the electric potential.
