Reconnection Rates Measured in Electron Diffusion Regions at the Dayside Magnetopause
Abstract
Using data acquired from NASAs Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission (MMS), WIND, and the Omni data set, we determine the reconnection rates at the dayside electron diffusion region for multiple events. Reconnection rates are calculated using the reconnection electric field, EM. We apply an optimized boundary-layer transform to determine this reconnection electric field. We measure rates between 0.05-0.2, which agree with theoretical predictions. In addition, we find that that solar-wind velocity and IMF -Bz tend to correlate independently with higher reconnection rates.
