The Next Evolution of EOSDIS
Abstract
In 2016, NASAs Earth Science Data and Information Systems (ESDIS) Project began looking at its next evolutionary step. At the time, the agency was making access to commercial cloud resources even easier for its entire organization. At that point, the ESDIS Project had been successfully operating the worlds largest earth science data system for over 20 years and was storing and distributing petabytes of data. But use of the commercial cloud was a compelling opportunity but not without risk. Starting with several prototypes, ESDIS made the assessment that data could be moved into the agencies Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud environment which would yield great benefits for the Earth Science community. Fast forward 5 years and we are well underway in this evolutionary step. This presentation will discuss our development and need for a NASA-compliant General Application Platform which provides the basis for our Earth Observing Data and Information System (EOSDIS) components. We will discuss our adoption of tools and techniques to make Earth science data readily available and more accessible to our user community.
