Implementation of the AQMS/Jiggle System at the Puerto Rico Seismic Network: Process, Pitfalls, and Triumphs
Abstract
As part of improvements and system hardening following Hurricane Maria, the Puerto Rico Seismic Network (PRSN) is migrating from its homegrown earthquake location processing software, PR-DANIS, to the open source AQMS (ANSS Quake Monitoring System)/Jiggle system employed by a number of US regional seismic networks of the Advanced National Seismic System (ANSS). Here, the process, pitfalls, and modifications made to the AQMS system will be discussed. This includes the implementation of the 64-bit Linux, PostgreSQL version of AQMS and the common waveform buffer (CWB); the harmonization process between the PR-DANIS and Jiggle reviewed earthquake solutions; improvements to AQMS to ingest origins from multiple sources; the development of a User Guide for Jiggle; as well as updates to the PRSN broadcast and Webpage system to include output from AQMS/Jiggle system. Because the PRSN is required to monitor seismicity in its authoritative area as well as regional seismicity to assist with tsunami monitoring, the most critical modification is the ability to import origins from multiple sources into the database. This allows the PRSN to utilize automatic locations from Earlybird and Earthworm as well as events reported by the USGS using the Product Data Layer (PDL) distribution system. To harmonize the old and new systems, they were run in parallel for 3 months, both for PRSN analysts to practice with Jiggle and to compare the solutions between the new and old systems. To meet the needs for usage at the PRSN, a Jiggle User Guide was developed. The guide is intended for the end user, rather than the systems operator, providing instructions for using Jiggle from the trenches rather than an installation guide. The guide will be made available to other users of the system and . The process of changing systems is not as simple as flicking a switch, but here we show one such way that this open source code can be implemented.
