MSR Science Planning Group 2 (MSPG2): Major Mission Milestones and Key Decision Points Timeline
Abstract
As part of the Mars Sample Return (MSR) Science Planning Group Phase 2 (MSPG2) activity, a timeline of key decision points for MSR was developed reflecting the timelines of the flight elements, a Sample Receiving Facility, the National Environmental Policy (NEPA) process, and necessary science management processes. Two versions were created both containing the same items to reflect shifts for a 2026 launch of Sample Retrieval Lander and Sample Fetch Rover and a 2031 sample arrival to Earth, versus a 2028 launch and a 2033 arrival. Both timelines include key mission milestones to establish the relative time points for the associated activities reflecting the needs of returned sample science. These should serve as a reference for key decision points, as well as to identify opportunities in the coming years for science community participation in this endeavor. International or interagency partnerships or agreements that need to be established are listed. Also included are decisions relating to the establishment of Announcements of Opportunity, sample selection, or infrastructure. Finally, points where funding is needed to support individual roles or multiple modalities for building infrastructure construction and operations are included. Note that while some of these milestones are set external to the MSPG2 group, most are based on the recommendations in the MSPG2 reports as the focus was primarily on items that were part of the MSPG2 activity. Disclaimer: The decision to implement Mars Sample Return will not be finalized until NASAs completion of the NEPA process. This document is being made available for planning and information purposes only.
