The water resources and extremes outlooks of Peru: an WRF and CREST study over a less frequently monitored area in South America
Abstract
Peru is considered as one of the most affected area by Climate Change, as the increase in temperature and retreat of tropical glaciers over the Andean Mountain, its limited water resources is being challenged by the company of population growth, intensive mining, and water contamination. In this study, we used regional hyperresolution WRF coupled with CREST-EF5 hydrological model to compare the hydrological conditions changes in Peru between 2010 to 2019 and 2020 to 2030, including the changes of stream flow, flashiness, soil moisture, and ground water availability. The results of the study heavily relied on the precipitation changes over the future projection. However, with the assumption of the constant impact from the human activities, this study provides a baseline of water resource changes in a water-scarce area of the world under the impact of Climate Change.
