A Dynamic, Open Science Tool Quantifying Point Source N loading to the Long Island Sound
Abstract
Point source nitrogen loads in the Long Island Sound watershed cause seasonal hypoxic events in the Sound, but the data on the seasonal variation of these point source loads across the watershed is not easily accessible to researchers or the public. Quantifying this seasonal variation may help explain the variation in hypoxic events. This study aims to gather all available monthly resolution data from the EPA Permit Compliance System and Integrated Compliance Information System databases for long-term point source N load monitoring data within the Long Island Sound watershed. Furthermore, this study will build an open science interactive dashboard that automatically pulls in, analyzes, and reports out new data to reproduce the analysis over time to facilitate regular communication and collaboration among stakeholders in the watershed.
