Measurements of Water Isotopologues During the DCOTSS 2021 Campaign: Insights into Convection and Transport in the Summer Stratosphere
Abstract
The water vapor mixing ratio of the stratosphere over the United States in summer is controlled by a mixture of dynamical processes including isentropic transport and lofting of air from deep convection. The latter can produce large enhancements in water vapor as water can be carried in the form of ice particles that evaporate in the undersaturated stratosphere. Water isotopologues can provide insights into these transport pathways as the ratio of the isotopologues is sensitive to the water origin. During the Dynamics and Chemistry of the Summer Stratosphere (DCOTSS) 2021 flight campaign measurements of total water isotopologues and other tracers were made aboard NASA's ER-2 aircraft. We will discuss data quality of the WI-ICOS instrument as well as present insights from the campaign.
