The Far-ultraviolet Variations of 17 Com
Abstract
All the archival International Ultraviolet Explorer spectra of 17 Com, the most massive member of the open cluster Coma Berenices, are used to show that the far-ultraviolet spectral energy distribution shows large variations at wavelengths shorter than 1800 Å. The large far-ultraviolet variations are most likely due to spots or belts of overabundant elements (chromium in particular) which come and go into the line of sight as the star rotates.
