Atmospheric extinction at the horizon during summer and Betelgeuse differential magnitude
Abstract
The first seasonal measurements of Betelgeuse luminosity are made at dawn in August. In the previous years an excess of luminosity of Betelgeuse was detected in this season. Differential comparison with Rigel failed under 4°, due to an extra atmospheric extinction. Data of August 1st, 2020 with alpha Orionis mv>0.4 mag. show this seasonal effect. STEREO and daylight observations in June-July 2020 are also compared with that result.
