Formation of massive black holes: interplay of collisions and accretion
Abstract
More than 100 supermassive black holes are known to exist at redshifts larger than 5.6, but their initial formation pathways are still uncertain. As fragmentation seems almost inevitable in high-redshift gas clouds, and gas is expected to be present at early times in our Universe, we explore formation scenarios based on the interplay of collisions and accretion. We briefly discuss the masses that are potentially achievable, as well as the main uncertainties.
