Funding and Supporting Policy-Driven Climate Change Research for the State of California
Abstract
The California Strategic Growth Council (SGC), an interagency State body that brings together seven state agencies, has administered a climate change research grant program since September 2017 and awarded three rounds of funding totaling ~$33 million to 20 research grants. The SGC's mission is to promote sustainable communities in California, focused broadly on supporting local economies, promoting equity, and ensuring environmental sustainability. With that mission in mind, the Climate Change Research Program has a focus on funding and supporting actionable, applied research that co-produces knowledge with partners, communities, and stakeholders. The Program also focuses on advancing science outcomes that advance State climate policy goals. In order to ensure the research advances policy outcomes, Program staff focus on connecting the researchers to relevant agencies, technical staff, and policy makers early in the research and throughout the life of the grant. In this session, staff will share approaches to both the review process and grant management that ensure connections are made to policy needs. Staff will showcase two or three ongoing research projects that are collaborating with State agencies to ensure results can be used to address policy needs. Two examples are a research project developing forest science data and management tools, and a project studying the displacement impacts of past State climate investments.
