Global and local high-resolution magnetic field inversion using spherical harmonic models of individual sources
Abstract
We present a software package for magnetic inversion including a user-friendly graphical interface. The software packages both serve for educational purposes in the field of geophysics or and scientific applications, e.g. interdisciplinary potential field studies.
Basically, the software features a step-wise approach, where first spherical prisms (tesseroids) are used for global magnetic inversion of satellite-derived lithospheric field models. These models serve as input for local high-resolution models for which airborne data are inverted in a suitable spectral range. As an example, the software is applied to various satellite and airborne dataset to produce high-resolution magnetization/susceptibility models of the Earth. The software provides an easy to use implementation and can be used to demonstrate the process of solving complex mathematical and physical problems in an easily accessible way. It also can be used to promote science to the general public and demonstrate solutions for potential field geophysics problems.- Publication:
