The Collaborative Reanalysis Technical Environment (CREATE): Analysis of a Multiple Reanalysis Ensemble
Abstract
The NASA Center for Climate Simulation (NCCS) is collaborating with the world's five major reanalysis projects to collect atmospheric data and present it through distribution, visualization, and analytical tools - resulting in the Collaborative REAanalysis Technical Environment (CREATE). In addition to the individual contributions of each Center, we have produced an ensemble of the reanalyses. The ensemble - Multiple Reanalysis Ensemble version 3 (MRE3) shows remarkable correlation with observations for variables such as precipitation, yet it is not necessarily useful with every other reanalysis variable. One important feature is that in certain cases, the MRE3 is less sensitive to changing input data streams. We will explore the deficiencies and advantages offered by an ensemble of reanalyses using tools such as Jupyter Notebooks provided by the CREATE Service. We will also present the results of our investigation into the possible use of MRE3 to look at trends.
