Earth Sciences Mentor Match: A new accessible mentorship program aiding underrepresented students in applying to graduate school and fellowships
Abstract
Many talented students do not have sufficient support and training to independently navigate the graduate school and fellowship application process. Earth Sciences Mentor Match was created to address existing gaps in accessible mentorship for underrepresented students interested in applying to graduate school and/or fellowships in the Earth Sciences. We modeled this program after the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Mentor Match program, which was created in 2017 and has connected over 200 students with mentors in their field of expertise. These programs were purposefully designed to be simple and low effort in order to help more students in need without any restrictions on memberships, requirements for formal applications, or mandatory conference attendance. We hope to grow this framework into a resource repository and hub for graduate school and fellowship applications through collaborations with others similarly focused on increasing diversity in the Earth Sciences.
