Ultraluminous X-ray sources of the starburst galaxy NGC 4631
Abstract
We propose to observe the galaxy NGC 4631 for a total exposure timeof 90 ks. NGC 4631 is an ideal target to gain fundamental informationon different astrophysical processes with one observation. The twomain aims of this proposal are: 1) to advance our understanding of theaccretion mechanism responsible for the peculiar soft X-ray emission ofthe bright ultraluminous super-soft source X-1; 2) to better constrainthe nature of the four known ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) and newlydetected transient ULXs. We will perform searches for fast periodicities, spectral analyses, and studies of the long-term X-ray variability. Inaddition, we will study the X-ray source populations in NGC 4631 andthe morphology of the hot X-ray emitting halo surrounding the galaxy tounprecedented detail.
