XMM-Newton scan of the base of the Fermi bubbles
Abstract
Covering 12 square degrees near the centre of the Milky Way with 25ksXMM observations will allow us to trace the base of the southern Fermibubble down to the Galactic disc, to study the origin of cosmic raysand gamma rays and to examine the outflows induced by starburst andpast AGN activity. This will ultimately allow us to determine thedistribution of warm and hot plasma that is feeding into the southernMilky Way halo. Moreover, the observations will allow us to characterisethe populations of low-luminosity X-ray sources at the Milky Way centerand at the base of the Galactic halo. This project will produce a legacydataset that can be used in the future for multiple purposes, notablyincluding time-domain investigations.
