Small scale capture fisheries sustainability analysis using emergy (embodied energy) approach
Abstract
Fishery in Jakarta bay has been the backbone of coastal livelihood for many years. The purpose of this research was to analyze the sustainability of capture fishery system in Jakarta bay based on embodied energy (emergy) approach. An emergy evaluation method or so-called emergy synthesis, the whole system is considered through a diagram in which the resource emerge flow and information are encouraged for system analysis, or in this study using the Ulgiati and Brown (1998); Odum (1996) approach. The results of this study showed that the emergy sustainability index (ESI) = 0.001159 sej/yr which explains that the system is not sustainable while the contribution of the catching fishery sector to the economy can be seen on the value of emergy yield ratio (EYR) = 1.00 which indicates the still low contribution of capture fishery sector to the economy of DKI Jakarta. From this research, it can be concluded that intrinsically capture fishery at the bay of Jakarta not sustainable and not give a maximal contribution to the economy of DKI Jakarta.
