The impact of cold ions on ultralow frequency (ULF) waves and the subsequent effects on the magnetospheric system
Abstract
Cold ion populations lead to an increase in magnetospheric mass density that lowers the Alfven speed and the frequency of ultralow frequency (ULF) waves. Regions of high mass density can focus and trap ULF wave energy. The frequency of the ULF waves also affects the energy of radiation belt particles that are most affected by radial diffusion.
