Scientific Data Stewardship for NOAA Oceanographic Satellite Observational Products.
Abstract
NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) serves a role as the US archive for oceanographic, geophysical, meteorological, and climate data products. NCEI provides data stewardship, including archive and distribution services for near real-time and delayed-mode data products as well as long-term scientific data stewardship for NOAA oceanographic satellite observational products. Based on the archive requirements and features of dataset, NCEI selects different archive infrastructures, which comprise the NOAA Comprehensive Large Array-data Stewardship System (CLASS), NCEI Archive Management System (AMS), the Common Ingest system, to implement ingest, archival, and basic access to the datasets. At NCEI, satellite oceanography group (SOG) leads the NCEI satellite oceanographic data stewardship end-to-end process through close collaboration with the data providers and staff from CLASS and NCEI data stewardship division. In a higher service tier, SOG develops tools to enable automated collection of quality assurance statistics in a granule to monitor and track the data statistics and metadata attributes, generates near real-time binned Level-3 gridded data, develops long-term global satellite climate data records (CDRs), and provides those results to the public via a user-friendly web interface. In the poster, we will present the operational archive systems, applied methodologies, and derived CDRs in NCEI scientific data stewardship for NOAA satellite oceanographic operational products
