The Space Weather TREC Space Weather Portal: A Tool for Enabling Research and Education
Abstract
The Chancellor of the University of Colorado recently awarded a Grand Challenge grant to a group of departments and labs for the development of the Space Weather Technology, Research and Education Center (SWx-TREC https://www.colorado.edu/spaceweather/). As part of this effort, the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) is developing a Space Weather Portal (http://lasp.colorado.edu/space-weather-portal) to provide unified access to disparate datasets.
Access to disparate datasets in disparate formats from disparate resources is a significant barrier to research and education in space weather. Using the Space Weather Portal, researchers and students can easily access numerous datasets that tell a "Sun to Mud" story of space weather events, can visualize those datasets in an intuitive timeline presentation and can download them for further analysis. This presentation will present how this tool can be used to describe the 2015 St. Patrick's Day storm quickly to enable educators to teach to the science, rather than to the access of data.- Publication:
