Seismic Shake-e: An open educational application to increase our seismic resilience.
Abstract
One main goal of processing and analyzing seismic records is increasing our knowledge about seismic hazard and risk. These procedures of processing and analysis are not trivial, and in fact, the first challenge is actually obtaining seismic records. On the other hand, most of the available processing software is highly specialized and oriented to users with fairly strong knowledge of seismology. That is, there is a great scarcity of user-friendly processing applications and useful to non-experts. To help bridging this gap, recently Aguilar et al. (2017) developed Seismograms Analyzer-e (SA-e, an application for record analysis that is amenable and useful for people with different backgrounds and needs). Taking SA-e as the reference and starting point, the new and versatile application, Seismic Shake-e (SS-e) is under development. This application will have powerful capabilities to analyze the valuable seismic records, retrieved from different databases, but preferably from European Databases/catalogs. SS-e has been partially granted by the 2019 EOVALUE European Call. In this work, we present all analysis features available at SS-e, which are available through a friendly menu, so a user can easily obtain desired results. For instance, the user can choose a seismic record according to the earthquake magnitude and the specific recording seismic station. Next, by clicking a single button a complete time and frequency analysis can be carried out, and SS-e displays a set of graphs including uncorrected and corrected accelerations in time, Fourier Spectrum of the corrected acceleration, and velocity and displacement seismograms. Finally, SS-e is able to compute and plot another valuable variable, such as the response spectra of accelerations, velocities, and displacements. These previous features are an example of the valuable particularities of the new Seismic Shake-e application that is oriented to make easy the actions of processing and analyzing seismic records.
