The Computing Connection: Using Space Exploration, Hands-on Activities, and On-line Tools to Bring Computational Thinking and Literacy to Libraries
Abstract
Sometimes we use amazing technologies to share NASA's discoveries, but other times the technologies used by NASA form a direct line to compelling STEAM experiences for learners. In this session we will focus on computing, a technology so integral to NASA's mission that historically NASA has been a key driver of computing progress. Today the role of computing in both NASA and many other sectors is evolving rapidly, and the same technologies that allow social media sites to recognize your face can help astronomers find objects of interest in unprecedentedly large quantities of scientific data. This provides a golden opportunity to engage learners in a key and high priority area of STEM: computing and computational thinking topics. Off the shelf robots can be used to explore the challenges of exploring other worlds with rovers, while online tools can be used to gain an understanding of machine learning and image recognition. We will discuss tools and resources available for engaging learners in computing and computational thinking, using the specific context of an NSF funded library program Exploring Space: Smart Spacecraft, Big Data, and Digital Models. This program introduces libraries and their patrons to computational thinking topics in the context of NASA space exploration using a range of strategies, including an interactive library exhibit, facilitation kits, and professional development. Technologies range from the high tech (robots, interactive kiosks) to low tech ("unplugged" computational thinking activities). Participants in this session will leave with an understanding that computational thinking activities can (and should) be done by and for all ages, as well as learning ways to tie CT concepts into existing STEAM activities.
