Using IODP Data to Enhance K-12, Undergraduate and Informal Science Education

The International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) has fifty years' worth of legacy data in its databases and repositories. These data have been generated over the years by the work of scientists and technicians aboard the scientific drilling facilities, JOIDES Resolution, Chikyu, Glomar Challenger, and other mission-specific platforms. Several innovative education and outreach programs have been developed to make these data accessible to broader audiences. These include professional development workshops, classroom activities and curricula, on-line modules, a traveling exhibit, and use of data, samples, and models in research experiences for undergraduates during programs like STEMSEAS and the new JR Academy. The School of Rock professional development program engages educators in using IODP data and samples with their students in K-16 classrooms nationally and internationally, and often results in the development of new curricula. New lesson plans and activities developed by SOR educators and others are posted on the joidesresolution.org and SERC websites, which serve as a rich resource for those seeking existing activities. Mentors use IODP data and samples with early undergraduates sailing on other research ships in the STEMSEAS program and JR Academy (on the JR), by way of introducing them to research at sea and the tremendous scientific value gained by exploring the seafloor. A traveling exhibit called In Search of Earth's Secrets takes IODP data "on the road" to showcase its exciting discoveries to the public nationwide. This session will introduce the wide variety of entry points for use of IODP data by non-technical audiences, and numerous examples of its implementation along a continuum of engagements, including both faculty and student projects, initiatives, and informal science education projects. Opportunities to further use and explore these data will be shared.
