AGU Resources and Actions to Advance Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DE&I) in STEM
Abstract
Issues and opportunities in Earth and Space Sciences and across STEM, including the issue of harassment and its impact on women scientists, are now well know and documented. The American Geophysical Union, a scientific society of > 60,000 members worldwide, has undertaken strategic initiatives over the past twenty-four months, to help spotlight and address these important issues. Building on its earlier work of establishing an updated AGU Ethics Policy which defines sexual harassment as scientific misconduct, AGU has recently adopted additional policies and practices towards its vision of operating as a model organization for advancing diversity and inclusion in science.
This presentation will highlight AGU demographic data, key D&I related metrics, and the recently adopted AGU Diversity and Inclusion strategic plan, as insights to AGU's DE&I efforts. Other important AGU actions—such as program work and resources through the AGU Ethics and Equity Center, AGU's growing ethics and D&I collaboration with scientific societies outside the U.S., and AGU's role in the formation of a consortium of more than 100 scientific societies to help leverage D&I-related leading practices and influence culture change—will also be discussed, including progress to date and remaining challenges and opportunities.- Publication:
