Evaluation of Surface Water Quality Using Multivariate Statistical Analysis Methods and Water Quality Index Method: A Case Study Coruh River Basin
Abstract
In this study, it was aimed to investigate the water quality data analysis results in Coruh River Basin by using multivariate statistical analysis methods and water quality index methods. Coruh River, which is located in northeastern Turkey, rises from Mescit Mountains in the north of Erzurum Plateau at 3000 m and reaches Black Sea near the city of Batumi in Georgia by passing through Eastern Black Sea and Eastern Anatolia regions in Turkey. Water quality data measurement results obtained by State Hydraulic Works 26th Regional Directorate from four different sites. Measurement of 17 water quality parameters (total hardness, sufate, chloride, bromine, phosphate, phosphorus, kjehdal nitrogen, organic nitrogen, nitrite nitrogen, nitrate nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, tolam organic carbon, color, turbidity, hydrogen sulfide, total alkalinity) was evaluated by collecting monthly samples between 2018 and 2019 from 4 monitoring sites in Coruh Basin. Many data were interpreted by using statistical methods such as analysis of variance (ANOVA), cluster analysis, (CA), factor analysis/principal component analysis (FA/PCA) and Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environmental Water Quality Index (CCME WQI). Water quality index is a method used to determine the quality of a water body. WQI gives a single number to represent the water quality data by using mathematical equations. Multivariate methods and exploratory data analyses are easily applied for interpretation of multi-component physicochemical and biochemical measurements and reducing the environmental data. The results of this study is important for decision makers as a guidance when they make environmental decisions since multivariate statistical methods including ANOVA, CA and PCA/FA were applied in this study in order to interpret several datasets and determine polluting factors affecting water quality and spatial changes of pollution.
