Atmospheric aerosol deposition in marine ecosystem
Abstract
Atmospheric aerosol particles transported and transformed in the atmosphere, followed by deposition to different ecosystems. For example, atmospheric particles deposit in marine ecosystem and impact marine productivity. Depositions of dust are a major source of iron and other micronutrients in remote oceans. Because iron is a critical micronutrient for organisms, aerosol deposition to the surface affects the primary ecosystem productivity and biological nitrogen fixation in the ocean. For these reasons, the chemistry of iron-containing aerosol at the air-sea interface is of great interest. In a broad sense, these iron-containing particles affect both the ocean nutrient biogeochemical cycle and the marine ecosystem. In this study we performed a detailed physico-chemical characterization of aerosol particles collected from remote islands in the North Atlantic. The purpose was to study the micro- and nano-scale properties of iron-containing particles that can reach the well-mixed layer at the air-ocean interface (the marine boundary layer). We performed micro-spectroscopy analysis of individual particles to determine iron contain in individual particles. In addition, we determined the mass concentration of iron containing particles utilizing the wavelength dependence of the aethalometer instrument. FLEXPART transport model was utilized to find source regions and interpret our results. In this presentation we will discuss results from few specific events present the characteristics of iron containing dust particles.
