Carbon, Climate, and US Forests: Synthesis of Harvesting, Wood Products, Deforestation, Reforestation, and Natural Disturbance Impacts
Abstract
This study presents a synthesis of work utilizing earth observations and forest inventory data to assess contemporary carbon dynamics of US forests and their climate impacts. We quantify the regional carbon balance of the forest sector (including wood products), examining spatial patterns of change and attributing regional trends to individual drivers. We document the potential of forest management options that could serve to enhance land carbon stocks and aid in climate change mitigation. We highlight recent disturbance trends and associated threats and vulnerabilities, as well as albedo offsets to the climate benefits of forests. Together, this provides a comprehensive framework for monitoring and understanding the carbon dynamics of forested regions and their contributions to global climate.
