Validation of the OMPS Nadir Profiler Ozone on Suomi NPP
Abstract
Data from the OMPS Nadir Profiler on Suomi NPP are being used to monitor the vertical distribution of ozone, continuing the time series of profile measurements from SBUV-type measurements dating back to 1978 with the SBUV on Nimbus 7. In the latest version 2.6 processing instrument artifacts have been identified and corrected, an improved scattered light correction and wavelength registration have been applied, and soft calibration techniques were implemented to produce a calibration consistent with the SBUV/2 v8.6 processing. The resulting ozone profile data are compared with satellite-based ozone profile data from the SBUV/2 on NOAA 19 and with data from MLS on Aura. Ground-based comparisons are made with lidar data from the Mauna Loa and with balloon sonde data. Total column ozone comparisons are made with OMI on Aura, with the SBUV/2 on NOAA 19, and with an ensemble of Brewer and Dobson instruments. The consistency for total column ozone is generally within +/-1%, while that for the altitude dependence is generally within +/-5%.
