Whole Atmosphere Characterization based on Arctic Oscillation Index
Abstract
The research here aims to systematically evaluate atmospheric parameters to provide valuable information to the hypersonic vehicle development community. This research leverages the 35-year climatological data (January 1980-November 2014) from the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model-eXtended (WACCM-X) 2.0 forced by NASA's Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA). WACCM-X data is used to simulate past monthly and hourly averaged columnar atmospheric variable from 1980 through 2014. The data is categorized based on the Arctic Oscillation (AO), a teleconnection based on the modulation of the polar vortex in the northern hemisphere, and is used to correlate the positive, neutral, and negative phase of the AO connected to these aforementioned profiles in the stratosphere.
