Civil and Scientific applications of CTBTO infrasound technology
Abstract
The International Monitoring System (IMS), installed and maintained by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) Preparatory Commission is a globally distributed network of seismic, hydro-acoustic, infrasound and radionuclide stations. The International Data Centre (IDC) of (CTBTO) Preparatory Commission receives, processes in near real time and archive data from the IMS. The main objective of acquiring the CTBTO data is to detect nuclear explosions underground, in the oceans and in the atmosphere. CTBTO data are also extremely valuable for civilian applications like tsunami early warning, monitoring volcanic eruptions, detecting Near-Earth Objects impacting the Earth atmosphere as well as for scientific studies such as better understanding the dynamic of the Earth middle atmosphere, evolution of infrasound noise created by glaciers or on characterizing the infrasound global wavefield.
These applications can benefit to CTBTO, whose main purpose is detecting nuclear explosions, by potentially helping to improve monitoring algorithms and to discriminate signals of interest for the CTBTO mission from signal of nuisance. Independent scientific evaluation of the data supports enhancement of data quality. To continuously support and expand the use of the vast amount of CTBTO data archived over almost two decades, the virtual Data Exploitation Centre (vDEC) is made available for scientific studies. Since 2011, vDEC provides scientists and researchers from many different disciplines and from around the globe with access to the CTBT IMS data to conduct research and to publish new findings.- Publication:
