On the integration of FV3 into NCAR's CESM
Abstract
The NGGPS selected FV3 dynamical core has recently been implemented in operations as part of the NCEP Global Forecast System (GFS) and is planned to be the foundation of the Unified Forecast System (UFS). In an effort to expand community engagement, the FV3 dynamic core has also been integrated into the CESM (NCAR's Community Earth System Model) and coupled with the CAM6 physics package (Community Atmosphere Model version 6). The initial goal of this effort is to make the FV3 dynamical core available to the community through the CESM and NCAR is in the process of evaluating its performance compared to NCAR's new dry-mass vertical coordinate version of the spectral-element dynamical core and MPAS (Model for Prediction Across Scales) for climate applications. This presentation will give an overview of this effort and preliminary results will be shown.
