Athena: Studying the Energetic Universe
Abstract
The Athena X-ray observatory has been conceived to study the Hot and Energetic Universe. Its principal areas of study will include the physical and chemical evolution of the hot baryons in the warm-hot intergalatcic medium, the physics of galaxy clusters, phenomena generated around black holes and feedback on all mass scales. Here I detail the science objectives and capabilities of Athena that pertain to its "Energetic Universe" theme, including a layered survey of AGN with redshift, targeted observations of compact objects including accreting black hole systems across all mass scales, the most sensitive observations ever taken of outflowing galactic winds, and violent explosions throughout the Universe.
