The Massive Hot Halo Around The HI Rich Spiral NGC 3968
Abstract
The extensive HI Arecibo survey, ALFALFA, revealed a new category ofspiral galaxy in the local volume: massive spirals with a gaseous contentcomparable the stellar mass. These galaxies have high spin parameters, which may be slowing the conversion of gas into stars. The gaseousdisks are regular, suggesting they arise from a radiatively cooling hotmassive galactic halo. A 5 ksec XMM observation of one such galaxy,NGC 3968, indeed revealed it to be X-ray luminous and with extendedemission. This program will establish the properties of this halo, including the temperature, mass, and cooling rate. These galaxies may belocal analogs to the active hot mode accretion process that was commonat z ~ 1-3 but is rare today.
