The nature of hard X-ray selected CV candidates
Abstract
The number of hard X-ray emitting Cataclysmic Variables (CVs) has beenboosted in the recent years, unveiling the dominance of asynchronouslyrotating, magnetic accreting white dwarf primaries - the IntermediatePolars. These systems are disputed to be important contributors to thegalactic population of low-luminosity X-ray sources. We have been carryingout a systematic identification programme of new optically discovered hardX-ray CV candidates with the unique potential of XMM-Newton to securelyassess their purported magnetic nature by detecting X-ray spin pulsesand characterizing their spectral properties. We aim at obtaining a CVflux-limited sample with Gaia distances finally making statistical studiespossible and uncover the true population of low luminosity sources.
