Earth's upper atmosphere
Abstract
Investigations of the Earth's upper atmosphere have been conducted at the Institute of Astronomy of the RAS for the last 30 years. One of the most important results of these studies is the creation of a model of the hot oxygen geocorona formation on the basis of kinetic Monte Carlo method, which allows predicting theoretically the distribution of hot oxygen atoms in the upper atmosphere of the Earth. The developed model is used to interpret observations of the formation and population of the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere by oxygen atoms with superthermal energies, and is also used to assess the non-gravitational effect of superthermal oxygen atoms on the satellite dynamics.
