Corrigendum to "Gunshot-wound dynamics model for John F. Kennedy assassination" [Heliyon 4 (2018) e00603]
Abstract
In the original published version of this article, Figure 8 depicted data points obtained from digitization of an image-scan of a figure published in [1, p. 91]. The author was not aware that the original data of this image could be found in the appendix of the same book [1, pp. 274, 276], which should have been used instead. In addition, the author has since learned that panels Figure 8b and Figure 8c have an erroneous data point, this resulting from the missing data point at Z318 that inadvertently had not been factored into the 1st and 2nd order difference calculations. Finally, it has also come to the author's attention that the estimate used for President Kennedy's "intact" brain mass (2100 g) (following rationale presented in [2, p. 355]) was most likely too large, falling well outside of the normal range (probably more than 3σ) for human males; this is not an error per se, but rather simply an oversight. The author regrets that these mistakes were not discovered prior to publication. An updated Figure 8 and a supplementary Figure 7 (for smaller assumed brain masses with higher jet/spray speeds estimated from Eq. (32) in agreement with Itek Corporation's median observed value [4, p. 62]), are shown below. These corrections do not affect any of the conclusions presented in the paper.
