Van Allen Probes Science Gateway
Abstract
The primary goal of the Van Allen Probes mission was to "Quantify the processes governing the Earth's radiation belt and ring current environment as the solar cycle transitions from solar maximum through the declining phase." Following the recommendation of the mission Sr Review, the Van Allen Probes Science Gateway was created to act as a centralized interface to the instrument Science Operation Centers (SOCs), provide mission planning tools, and host a number of science related activities such as the bibliography, access to high level data products, etc. The website provides to the scientific community the capability of creating publication quality plots of orbital content plots, dynamical energy spectra, L-shell context plots, FFT spectra of wave data, solar wind and geomagnetic indices data, etc. Users can save their work in the form of a URL and easily share it with colleagues. Most importantly, the Gateway acts as the primary site for processing and delivering the RBSP Space Weather data to users in near real-time to help minimize the impact of solar storms on space assets and Earth infrastructures. RBSP has partnered NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) in Bounder, CO to develop near-real time data products that nowcasts radiation intensities inside the radiation belts and at GOES geosynchronous orbit. These plots are available at www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/van-allen-probes-radiation-belt-plots
Furthermore, RBSP Science Gateway team has developed another data product that extrapolates the radiation flux intensity detected along the RBSP spacecraft orbits over the entire volume inside the radiation belts. We present the latest implementations added to the Van Allen Probes Science Gateway, which includes: - Phase space density orbital profile and L-star shell plots based on ECT MagEIS and ECT REPT data. We also offer the user the choice of using TS04 or TS07 magnetic ephemeris. The web interface will also allow users to download either CDF files that contain the entire range of energy and pitch angles available, or only data used for plotting purposes. - Download capability of user customized CDF data files used to create user specified plots. - Coordination with other missions (ERG/ARASE, NOAA). - End of mission plans for the Van Allen Probes Science Gateway on how to maintain the web site for the future.- Publication:
